With the recent explosion in price of Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet era SIRs, we are going to take a look at several of what we here at Gateway Collectibles find to be the most interest, and at times confusing, cards going on a run. Prices will be based on TCG Player as of 3/1/2025.
First up, we have perhaps the most unsurprising of the list, the Moonbreon card from Sword and Shield's Evolving Skies set.

Today's market price of the card is $1309.46. This card, probably being the most recognizable and sought after card of the Sword and Shield era, has seen the highest dollar value increase of modern era cards. Back in the beginning of December this card could have been yours for just over $800. We are talking a 62% increase in 3 months time! That value has certainly been elevated by not only the hype surrounding Pokemon as a whole, but also Scarlet and Violet's answer to this card, the Sunbreon. Now, hold on because this card is not even close to the highest percentage increase of what we will explore in this list.
Lets bring it up to the latest era of Pokemon, Scarlet and Violet. In my opinion, Paldea Evolved is a bit slept on. If this set came out end of 2024 or beginning of 2025, I think we'd see these prices much higher. A lot of cards from this set have seen huge value spikes. But there is one in particular I want to take a look at.

The Frigibax evolution series of cards have all seen increases of over 150%, with Artctibax jumping an astonishing 541%. A card that could have been had at just over $4 at the start of November, is now sitting at $25.76 market value. This is down from a high of $42.24, maybe indicating the hype train for the card specifically has cooled off. The artwork alone is enough to justify the spike in price, but I believe the love for the artist of the card, Tomokazu Komiya, lent a hand in all of the cards jumps. You may have seen another card of his, the Drowzee from S&V Base, seeing a massive surge in recent weeks. Going forward, I think I will be trying to get my hands on any of his full art cards due to his clear appeal to other Pokemon collectors.
What about a classic Pokemon that we all know and love? Pikachu, of course! Being such a beloved Pokemon, Pikachu cards have seen an increase across almost all sets of modern era cards. The one we are going to take a look at is the Pikachu from Crown Zenith's Galarian Gallery.

All of the Galarian Gallery has seen big jumps, probably due in part to the recent availability of the set through Sea and Sky boxes available at Sam's Club. This has given new collectors the ability to experience the beauty of this set for themselves. In the case of the Pikachu card, it has seen nearly a 200% increase from $5.32 at the start of December to $12.43 now in March of 2025. This card is available on the Gateway Collectible's shop here!
Another Galarian Gallery, and one of my favorites from this set, Mew. With other great Mew cards in recent years such as the 151 promo or the unforgettable Bubble Mew from Paldean Fates, this card might struggle to stand out. However, I think the featuring of some other great Pokemon gives this card a lot of character.

This card was only around $7.53 3 months ago. Now, it is sitting at $21.36 market. If you check out this page here, you might be able to get it for just a little less. Saying this card is slept on might be a little too one the nose, but I do think this has greater potential than the $20 price point suggests.
Lastly, Gastly. His big brother Gengar usually gets the special treatment with great artworks. However, this illustration rare from Temporal Forces does a great job shining the light on Gastly for once, even if Gengar still makes an appearance.

For just $30.84, this card could have been yours in December 2024. Now, market has this card sitting at a solid $59.20! In my opinion, that over 91% spike in price is well deserved. One last plug, while the English card holds more value, it's crazy that you can get a Korean Booster Box with a chance to pull this card, here, for less the value of the card itself! It's a great option for collector who wants to appreciate the art and get some rips in at a good value.
